The route from Mendoza to Viña del Mar
From Mendoza the road follows Ruta 7 west, up the valley toward the mountains, through Uspallata and past Puente del Inca, where Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, is visible on a clear day. The road then climbs to the Cristo Redentor pass and the Los Libertadores border complex. On the Chilean side it descends in the well known switchbacks and continues toward the central valley and the coast, ending in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso.
The trip takes around 7 hours 45 minutes, and that figure does not include the delays at immigration and customs, which can be significant on busy days. The mountain section is slow by nature, with curves, climbs and trucks. Snow can also close the pass in winter, which means the trip can be delayed or rescheduled depending on the conditions. If you travel between June and September, keep some flexibility in your plans.
One practical advantage of this route is that it avoids the detour into Santiago. After the descent, the road turns toward the coast, so the day ends by the sea instead of in a bus terminal. The distance is shorter than it feels, but the mountain driving, the border and the stops are what make the day long, so plan to arrive in the afternoon or evening rather than for lunch.
Why go by private transfer instead of the usual options
Most travelers who cross from Mendoza to the Chilean coast take a long-distance bus to Santiago and then change to another bus toward Viña del Mar. Others rent a car and face the pass and the border by themselves. A private transfer solves the same trip in a different way:
- No change in Santiago: the vehicle goes from Mendoza to the coast, so you do not carry bags from one terminal to another halfway through the day.
- A driver who knows the pass: the Cristo Redentor road has curves, altitude and winter weather, and it is better to have someone who drives it often than to learn it with a rental car.
- Door to door on both ends: pickup at your hotel or at Mendoza airport, with flight tracking and a sign at arrivals, and drop-off at your address in Viña del Mar or Valparaíso.
- Photo stops where it makes sense: viewpoints near Uspallata, Puente del Inca and the switchbacks are easier to enjoy when you are not driving.
- Your own schedule: you choose the departure time, rather than adjusting to the schedule of a long-distance service.
Why the destination is worth the climb
Viña del Mar is known as the garden city of Chile’s central coast, with long beaches, a seaside promenade and parks. It sits right next to Valparaíso, a port city of colorful hills and old funiculars that is a short drive from Viña. Many travelers spend a few days between the two, walking the hills in Valparaíso and enjoying the coast in Viña.
The trip itself is part of the experience. You start in Argentina’s wine country, with the vineyards and the plains around Mendoza, climb through high mountain scenery and descend into Chile’s green valleys before reaching the ocean. In a single day you move from the desert foothills to the Pacific, a contrast few road trips offer.

Practical tips for crossing the Andes
Leave in the morning. It gives you daylight for the mountain section and a margin for the border. Keep passports in your hand luggage and wear layers: it can be warm in Mendoza and cold at the pass, even in summer.
Altitude is moderate for most people but some notice it near the top, so drink water and avoid heavy meals before the climb. Tell us in advance if you travel with children so we can arrange child seats, and let us know about extra luggage. Before you go, check the weather forecast for the pass, especially in winter, and keep an eye on any messages from us if conditions change.
Bring a light jacket, sunglasses and sun protection, since the sun is strong at altitude. Keep a bottle of water and some snacks within reach, and charge your phone before you leave. If you are carrying wine or other items bought in Mendoza, ask us about space, and check the rules for what you may bring into Chile.
Border crossing between Argentina and Chile
This route crosses the border at the Los Libertadores complex. Every passenger must carry a valid passport. Requirements depend on your nationality, so check them before traveling. You pass through immigration and customs on both sides, and the travel time we give does not include these delays.
- Documents: passport for everyone, including children. Minors who do not travel with both parents need the proper authorization.
- Food: fresh food is not allowed into Chile. Do not carry fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products or similar items, and finish them or leave them in Mendoza before you go.
- Time: allow for extra time and do not schedule tight connections or tours on the day of arrival.
- Winter: the pass can close for snow, so check the status before the trip and stay in touch with us.
