The road from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, step by step

You leave Montevideo on Uruguay’s Ruta 1 and Ruta 2 and head west across the interior of the country to Fray Bentos on the Uruguay River. There, the General San Martín international bridge takes you into Argentina, with one border crossing and the formalities on each side. From the bridge, the route runs through the province of Entre Ríos, passes Gualeguaychú, and continues south to the Buenos Aires area.

The total is around 9 hours 50 minutes, and that estimate does not include the time at immigration and customs, which changes with the day and the season. Treat the trip as a full day. If you have a flight out of Ezeiza or Aeroparque, give yourself a generous margin and do not plan on the earliest possible arrival time.

It helps to think of the day in three blocks: the first leg from Montevideo to the river, the border and the bridge, and the long run from the bridge to Buenos Aires. Traffic matters mostly at the end, when you reach the Buenos Aires area at a busy hour, and your driver will tell you how the road looks as you go.

Why go by private road transfer

The usual alternative is to get to the port, take the ferry across the Río de la Plata and then reach your final address in Buenos Aires from the terminal. That works for a light traveler. For everyone else, the road transfer has some clear advantages:

  • Bags in the vehicle: luggage, gifts and bulky items from Uruguay travel with you, and nobody weighs or limits them at a counter.
  • One vehicle from address to address: no terminal changes, no taxi hunt at the other end, and no transfer between stations with bags in hand.
  • Good for groups and families: everyone travels together in one vehicle, and children can have a seat arranged if you tell us before the trip.
  • Airport drop-off: if you fly out of Buenos Aires, we can take you straight to Ezeiza or Aeroparque.
  • No border paperwork on your own: your driver does this crossing regularly in the course of the work and stays with you through the process.

What you will see and where Buenos Aires begins

The road gives you a different view of both countries. In Uruguay you cross rolling countryside and small towns on the way to the river. In Argentina, Entre Ríos is flat and green, with farmland, palm stands in some areas and Gualeguaychú, a river city that is a common place to stop before continuing. Closer to Buenos Aires, traffic grows and the landscape turns urban.

Arriving by road also changes the arrival itself. Instead of coming in through a river port, you enter the Buenos Aires area from the north and are taken to the exact address you give us, whether it is a hotel in Palermo, an apartment in the center or the departures hall at Aeroparque or Ezeiza.

Booking steps

  • Message us on WhatsApp with the date, the pickup address in Montevideo and the destination in Buenos Aires, including the airport and flight time if you are flying out.
  • We confirm the vehicle, the driver and the pickup time, counting backward from your flight if there is one.
  • Your driver picks you up at the address, crosses the border with you and keeps you informed along the way.
  • You arrive at the address in Buenos Aires or at the airport. If you need the opposite direction too, ask for both together.

Tips for a long day on the road

Leave in the early morning, especially if you are catching a flight. Keep passports and any travel documents in your hand luggage, and have snacks and water in the vehicle. We make stops for a meal and a restroom, and you can ask for more.

Wear comfortable clothes and layers, since the temperature changes between the early morning and the afternoon. If you travel with children, tell us in advance so we can plan child seats and extra stops. Charge your phone before leaving, because you will want it at the border and when you arrive in Buenos Aires.

Keep the booking details and the address of your destination written down or saved on your phone. If you are heading to an airport, tell us the terminal and the airline so the drop-off is at the right door. And if you plan to buy things in Uruguay to bring back, ask us before the trip about space in the vehicle.

Border crossing between Uruguay and Argentina

There is one border crossing, at the General San Martín international bridge. Every passenger needs a valid passport. Citizens of Mercosur countries can use their national ID if it is accepted for the crossing. Requirements depend on your nationality, so check them before you travel. We cannot confirm visa rules for you.

  • Immigration and customs: you complete the formalities on the Uruguayan side and then on the Argentine side, following the officers’ instructions.
  • Minors: children and teenagers who do not travel with both parents need the proper authorization. Verify the documents that apply to your case.
  • Food: do not bring fresh fruit, meat or dairy products across, because customs may ask you to leave them.
  • Time: the travel time we give does not include immigration delays, so do not plan tight connections after you arrive.
